The purpose of this essay is to define the concepts of plagiarism and citation, as well as to analyze the reasons for borrowing design techniques and deliberately assigning authorship to someone else’s work. The theme of plagiarism and citation does not lose its relevance from the very moment of the appearance of the phenomenon itself. Plagiarism has always excited people of various professions – scientists, writers, artists, designers often face the same problem, ask and answer the same questions. With this in mind, materials were written for writing the essay that relate not only to design, but also to plagiarism in general. The answers to the questions were also found in the philosophical teachings, historical facts and scientific articles relating to plagiarism in the literary region. In conditions of information accessibility, it became difficult to control the separation of the concepts of plagiarism and citation. The definition of plagiarism as “misappropriation of someone else without attribution and without making changes punishable by law” similarly, it is not clear whether theft can be considered the adherence to common trends and the use of universal forms. Do not forget about the similar works of art that have emerged under the influence of certain historical situations in completely different cultures. The result of the research papers carried out in this essay is the confirmation of the claimed thesis. The concepts of plagiarism and citation are an integral part of design and art in general, and it is not worth giving an unambiguous assessment to the problem; Instead, one should look at plagiarism as two different paradigms. First, plagiarism is unresolved to a greater extent, but an urgent problem of modern society. Secondly, it is the basis of all art, both in the case of mimesis, and in the example of attitudes toward plagiarism in modern society, where plagiarism and citation often serves as the basis for the creation of new ideas in the postmodern era. The research conducted led us to a rethinking of such a phenomenon as plagiarism, and forced us to abandon the initial unambiguously negative perception.
